Jarl couldn’t fall asleep, even after Ingrid had drifted off. His mind was too busy, and no matter what he did, he couldn’t seem to relax. He wasn’t sure how long he sat there, but the brazier was now burning low.

Gently, he laid the Spear Maiden down and covered her in furs before retrieving his boots and creeping toward the tent flap.

When he stepped outside, the cold, gusty air greeted him like a man he had wronged. It punched in the face with a frozen fist, and he shivered, pulling his hood up to ward away the invading chill. Why couldn’t all this happen during a warmer part of the year? he wondered, making his way over to where his men were camping. Fighting in this weather is going to have some major drawbacks. I can feel it.

The omnipresent layer of clouds had parted somewhat, and he looked up to see an ocean of stars winking back at him. It was a beautiful sight, contrasting sharply the bleak world in which they were currently living.

Nothing like the infinite night sky to make a man feel small. Somehow, though, the prospect of being a father made him feel even smaller.

“A damn child,” he muttered in disbelief as he walked between the tents. “And a child of two different Clan Lords, no less.” He wasn’t sure if that would make it the luckiest baby on Njordrassil, or the unluckiest one.

He breathed the frosty air and shook his head, wanting to focus his thoughts on something else. Unwittingly, he brought his stats to mind.
